Tenwek
We have been enjoying beautiful weather, catching up with friends, and taking care of patients these few days at Tenwek. We arrived Thursday night after a long and bumpy ride (it took us about 8 hours on intermittently rough roads). It has been a nice change that we have very much enjoyed. Jason has been able to participate in a lot of surgeries here and is loving it. I worked a couple of long shifts helping out with the cardiac patients, but by Sunday afternoon, all the post-op patients had gone to the regular wards and were doing well. Sunday we attended the church on the hospital compound, enjoyed a great lunch provided by the guest house staff, took an afternoon nap, visited with the new cardiac team when they arrived, and then had a movie night where we watched "Pelican Brief" (a really good mystery movie for those who have never seen it). It was a really nice day.
Today there have been a lot of people around so I've just been on "stand-by" as needed. Jason got to help with a "whipple" this morning (a very complicated pancreatic surgery). He's now working on a hernia repair I think. Intermittently, he's been meeting with people to set up the research project for when we return in February.
We'll be heading back to Kapsowar early tomorrow morning. We will stop in Eldoret for about an hour or so to pick up some food and supplies for our last few weeks here. We're then planning to stop in a place called Iten for a nice meal. There is a restaurant and motel called "Kerio View" in Iten that one of the missionaries here in Kenya told us about. We stopped there with our driver on the way down here and the food was wonderful. The view is absolutely incredible as it overlooks the Kerio Valley. The place is popular for both hang-gliding and for running training. Some of the best runners from Kenya train in Iten because of the altitude and mountains.
Well, I'm going to work on some teaching material for when we return to Kapsowar. I'll try to update again soon!
